How Frequent Are Prenatal Visits?
When everything sails smoothly, the typical pattern of prenatal appointments is once every four weeks until about week 36 of your pregnancy. From then onwards, the frequency usually amps up, with appointments around week 38, followed by weekly visits till the arrival of your little bundle of joy.
Remember, though, pregnancies are as unique as fingerprints! Different healthcare providers might follow different schedules. Moreover, if your pregnancy is considered high-risk, you might need to visit the doctor more often. But don’t worry – this just ensures you and your tiny tot receive all the care you both deserve!

Let's break these visits down a bit...
10-12 weeks
Once your first visit wraps up, you'll notice your prenatal check-ups beginning to follow a steady rhythm. In each consultation, your healthcare professionals will make inquiries about your wellbeing. They'll keep tabs on crucial indicators like your baby and uterus's growth, your weight, and your blood pressure. And here's the exciting bit – around the 10-12 week mark of your pregnancy journey, you're likely to hear your baby's heartbeat for the first time.
16-18 weeks
Fast-forward to the 16-18 week stage, and you'll find this appointment to be pretty standard too. Just like before, your healthcare team will diligently take various measurements and ensure they understand how you're holding up. This routine maintenance will ensure that you and your little one stay on the best path for a healthy pregnancy.
20-22 weeks
During this visit, you'll be introduced to another ultrasound commonly known as the "anatomy scan". This specific ultrasound helps measure your baby's size, evaluate the health of their organs, and assess the volume of amniotic fluid surrounding them. Additionally, it screens for rare conditions like spina bifida or a cleft lip. Not to mention, if you're eager to discover your baby's biological sex, this is the appointment where you can get that exciting news!
24-28 weeks
As you approach the final stages of your second trimester or the onset of your third trimester, your healthcare team will repeat certain tests that were conducted during your initial visit. They'll examine signs of Treponema bacteria - the culprit behind many sexually transmitted infections and might carry out a blood test to monitor your iron levels and screen for anemia. Furthermore, they might conduct a glucose test to identify any potential signs of gestational diabetes.
32 weeks
This visit is a regular check-up where your healthcare team will conduct routine measurements and ask about your well-being.
36 weeks
As your delivery date nears, a new test is added to the itinerary: a vaginal swab to screen for Group B Streptococcus (Strep). The presence of Group B Strep bacteria in your body fluctuates naturally, but it could potentially lead to severe infections in newborns. If the bacteria is detected, you may be given antibiotics during labor to prevent any complications.
Around this same time, your healthcare provider may conduct a further pelvic exam to determine your baby's position. If the baby isn't oriented for a head-first delivery, they may suggest specific exercises or even manual adjustments to guide the baby into the optimal position. If it appears unlikely that your baby will move into a head-first position, your healthcare provider will have a discussion with you about possible next steps.
38-40 weeks
As you approach the 38th week, your delivery day is imminent, and your healthcare providers will start to closely monitor your progress. Each pregnancy varies, so from this point forward, you may have weekly prenatal visits until your baby arrives.
These consultations will largely resemble your typical prenatal check-ups. Your health team will assess your weight and blood pressure and observe your baby's growth, heartbeat, and position. The primary change is that your doctor or midwife might also verify if your cervix is beginning to dilate, which can occur gradually as your baby descends into your pelvic region. This can sometimes be an early labor indication.
Supplementary examinations
Remember, this timeline is just a guide and does not represent every possible appointment or test during pregnancy. Depending on your individual circumstances, you may have more frequent prenatal visits, and you could be offered additional optional tests. For instance, in the early stages of your pregnancy, you can choose to undergo tests that screen for chromosomal abnormalities in your baby. Consult your healthcare provider for more information.
If your pregnancy extends past the 40th week, you may undergo more appointments and tests. In such a scenario, your healthcare team will want to keep an even closer watch on you and your baby's progress.
Consistent prenatal appointments are the cornerstone for a healthy pregnancy. They equip your care team with the necessary information to support you and your little nugget at every phase. So, no matter how your pregnancy journey unfolds, when D-day finally arrives, rest assured, you'll be ready!
